WellStar Cobb Hospital Earns Baby-Friendly Designation

October 12, 2016

candid_debbieadjustsbabyKnown for excellence in maternity care, WellStar Cobb Hospital is one of a select few to be designated a Baby-Friendly Hospital by Baby-Friendly USA. Only five other Georgia hospitals hold this designation.

“The Baby-Friendly designation is the gold standard of care and validation that everything we do is focused on giving our babies the healthiest start to life,” said Rhonda Howell, executive director of Women’s Nursing at Cobb Hospital. “Our dedicated team members go above and beyond to anticipate patients’ needs to achieve world-class healthcare.”

The Baby-Friendly Initiative is a global program launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to promote breastfeeding. Hospitals and birthing places commit to a 10-step program, which includes helping mothers breastfeed within one hour of birth and keeping infants and mothers in the same room together.

“Infants room in with their mothers where we do everything we can to set mothers up for successful breastfeeding. It is proven that breastfeeding lowers risks for certain diseases and improves health outcomes for both mothers and babies,” Howell said. “Moms have access to certified lactation consultants who can help overcome obstacles to breastfeeding.”

Every year, more than 3,600 babies are delivered at Cobb Hospital and each new life is celebrated with a welcoming atmosphere. In 2014, the hospital Women’s Center underwent a complete renovation of 70 Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby rooms.

A modern design changed the perception of what a hospital room should look like, providing new families a serene setting to begin life together. The new Baby-Friendly designation shows that patient care goes beyond renovations and technology.
