Focus on What’s Important

Start focusing on spending time on what’s important to you and don’t let what’s important become at the mercy of things that are least important. There’s only a critical amount of things that you truly want to do but, are you doing them?  If not,  you need to start focusing on blocking your time and removing distractions from your life. Distractions will deter you from what you what in life and make it more difficult. Keep in mind, there’s a difference between being productive and being busy. Being productive is allocating energy towards something that’s going to either help you grow as a person or help you deliver more value to other people around you. Being busy simply means you’re spending time- doing anything. Watching tv can be considered you being busy or even doing nothing is you being busy-doing nothing. Regardless, the prior is the ultimate purpose in life.

What are you Doing?

Look at what you’re doing on a daily basis, ask yourself, “Is this something that is helping me grow”? if not, the solution is very simple. Stop doing it, cut it out, and/or remove it from your daily activities. We always use the excuse that we don’t have enough time but if we cut out all the unimportant things from our life, it’s amazing how we can start claiming 2,3, or even 4 hours of extra time a day by focusing on the important things.This will take time to do. You’re going to have to let go of some deeply held habits too but if you put enough time and energy into being disciplined, you can stay on track.

Stay on Track

Staying on track is critical because the moment you veer off, it takes a lot of energy and time to get you back on track. Stay on track even if it means slowing down.

“Fast progress and slow progress are a lot better than no progress.”

I’ve had to learn this with writing. There’s times I could sit down and write for 3-4 days and then stop for two weeks because I lost focus or let distractions get the best of me. And when I tried to resume after two weeks off, it was like starting all over again since I lost all that momentum.When I tried to get back up to speed, the time and energy involved made it that much more difficult. Lesson learned from this- don’t stop!

Always remember to keep your focus on what you truly want. A sure way to help with that is to have clearly defined goals. Write them down. Look at at them every day. Rewrite them if you have to. (I would do this to have them become ingrained in my mind.)

Whatever you do, never act without a purpose because when you do that, the time you wasted can never be regained.
