WellStar Health System Offers Lung Cancer Screenings for Veterans

October 25, 2012

WellStar Health System is reaching out to local military veterans to receive lung cancer and respiratory risk screenings during a one-day special event to honor these individuals who have served our country. Screenings will be conducted at three locations in Cobb and Paulding counties from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 12 – the day after Veteran’s Day – and are being made available thanks to the generosity of the WellStar Foundation.

Veterans will receive a free respiratory risk assessment to screen for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and sleep disorders in addition to a lung cancer screening evaluation. Those who meet the criteria for being at risk for lung cancer will be offered a low-dose lung CT scan for $49 (normally $199).

Military veterans, most of who are at a 25-50% higher risk for lung cancer than civilians due to smoking history and exposure to known carcinogens, including Agent Orange, should call 770-956-STAR to schedule the screenings at the Marietta, Acworth or Hiram location listed below. Screening spaces are limited.

• WellStar Acworth Health Park: 4550 Cobb Parkway, Acworth
• WellStar Kennestone Imaging Center: 55 Whitcher Street, Marietta
• WellStar Paulding Imaging Center: 148 Bill Carruth Parkway, Hiram

WellStar is joining the Lung Cancer Alliance, the Vietnam Veterans of America and other screening centers of excellence across the country for this screening event. Only 15% of lung cancers are diagnosed at an early, curable stage. Today, there is scientific validation that screening those at high risk with low-dose CT scans can save tens of thousands of lives per year.
