Six Flags Over Georgia Celebrates its 45th Anniversary

June 14, 2012

On June 16, Six Flags Over Georgia will celebrate its 45th anniversary. Six Flags was opened in 1967 in Austell, becoming the first multi-gated theme park in the United States. From well-known rides like the “Scream Machine,” “Batman: The Ride,” and “Goliath,” to energetic live shows, Six Flags has entertained millions of visitors from across the nation over the past 45 years.

Every year Six Flags attracts visitors from all over to Cobb County, boosting the local economy and providing thousands of seasonal employment opportunities. Chamber Ink asked Brad Malone, Six Flags Over Georgia’s communications manager, about the exciting celebration and how the park has benefited Cobb Counny.

Chamber Ink: Please share with us some the park’s defining moments throughout its 45-year history.

Malone: “The most memorable defining moment would be the day we opened: June 16, 1967.

In 1973, Six Flags added the Cotton States Exposition area, featuring the Great American Scream Machine. Upon its opening, the Scream Machine was the world’s tallest, longest and fastest roller coaster.

In 1978, Mind Bender was added. Mind Bender became the first triple-loop coaster in the world.

In 1997, Six Flags added Batman: The Ride. Jolly Roger’s Island became Gotham City. Mind Bender was repainted to a green and black paint scheme to match the Riddler.

In 2005, Six Flags added Skull Island, a water-park play fort.

In 2006, Six Flags added Goliath. Goliath is the tallest, fastest and longest roller coaster in the park. To install Goliath, Six Flags Over Georgia made its largest expansion since its opening in 1967.

In 2011, Six Flags Over Georgia added Dare Devil Dive, the park’s newest coaster. Dare Devil Dive is a Euro-Fighter roller coaster featuring a beyond-vertical nine-story drop.”

Chamber Ink: What exciting new attractions is Six Flags Over Georgia looking forward to debuting this season?

Malone: “This season Six Flags Over Georgia debuted iLuminate—an incredible new show that features state-of-the-art light up costumes with stunning visual effects. The show was featured on the hit television series “America’s Got Talent.” iLuminate runs through Aug. 12. Six Flags is also excited to offer a Summer Thrill Pass for the 2012 season. For the same price as a one-day admission ticket, guests receive unlimited admission to Six Flags Over Georgia all summer long.”

Chamber Ink: Over the past 45 years, how has Six Flags contributed to the growing economy in Cobb County?

Malone: “Six Flags Over Georgia is cited as the No. 1 reason people visit Cobb County. Six Flags attracts guests from all over the country. Guests who come from out of town stimulate Cobb County’s economy by visiting tourist attractions around the park, making hotel accommodations in the area, shopping at local retail outlets and dining at local restaurants.”

Chamber Ink: How can Cobb Chamber members take part in your 45th anniversary?

Malone: “The 45th Anniversary Celebration will take place Saturday, June 16. To attend the celebration, Cobb Chamber members need only to purchase a one-day admission ticket. Season Pass and Summer Thrill Pass holders may also attend the celebration.

For the best deal, Cobb Chamber members can visit and purchase a one-day, three-day advance purchase for $34.99. These must be purchased three or more days before the event.”

The anniversary celebration will feature celebrity guest Jeff Foxworthy, a firework show, and other fun family festivities. Live entertainment will follow the anniversary ceremony and include jugglers, stilt-walkers and musical performance. Be sure not to miss out on this fun opportunity to relive childhood memories and enjoy a wonderful afternoon filled with excitement!
